From the quiet stretches of rural Zambia to global platforms of agribusiness leadership, Dr. Harold Mayaba has built a life guided by intention rather than circumstance. Orphaned at fourteen and raised by his grandparents, his early years were shaped by loss, uncertainty, and determination. Studying by kerosene lamp and knocking on doors for support were not moments of despair. They became the foundation of grit, discipline, and vision.
Education emerged as his anchor. It was not simply a means of advancement, but a lifeline. Those early experiences instilled a deep awareness of inequality and ignited a desire to create change that reached beyond personal success.
Agriculture as a Pathway to Change
Dr. Mayaba chose agriculture not by chance, but by conviction. He saw it as the intersection of livelihood, food security, and dignity. His professional journey began in Zambia as a Livestock Officer at Rusangu University, followed by a role as Farm Manager at the Ministry of Agriculture. These early roles immersed him in the realities farmers face and exposed systemic barriers limiting rural growth.
Seeking broader exposure, he moved to New Zealand, where he worked across dairy and poultry operations, eventually becoming a Production Manager. Alongside full time work, he pursued higher education relentlessly, earning multiple degrees and culminating in a PhD in Agribusiness from Lincoln University.
His doctoral research focused on consumer welfare and animal welfare policy, reinforcing his belief that markets, ethics, and human values must evolve together.
Blending Scholarship With Purpose
Academic achievement was never an endpoint. It was a tool. Today, Dr. Mayaba leads H|M Agri-Food Consulting and Speaking, where he integrates research, consulting, and motivational leadership to help individuals and organizations grow with clarity and purpose.
He is also the founder of TRADEit Zambia, an e-commerce and innovation hub designed to open digital markets to entrepreneurs previously constrained by geography and limited access. What began as a response to isolation has grown into a platform fostering inclusive trade and sustainable growth across Africa.
Across both ventures, his work is anchored in three principles shaped by lived experience: Purpose, Hope, and Resilience.
Leadership Rooted in Empathy
Dr. Mayaba’s leadership style rejects hierarchy for influence grounded in service. He leads with empathy, clarity, and empowerment, believing that people perform best when they understand how their role connects to a larger mission.
His academic rigor informs analytical decision making. His personal journey brings compassion. Together, they shape environments where individuals feel valued, trusted, and inspired to innovate. In agribusiness, this means equipping farmers, entrepreneurs, and students with knowledge that enables independence rather than dependence.
Leadership, to him, is not about control. It is about cultivation.
Initiatives That Create Lasting Impact
Among his most impactful initiatives is TRADEit Zambia, which has enabled small businesses to access digital markets, trade beyond borders, and build sustainable models. It represents his commitment to practical inclusion.
At H|M Agri-Food Consulting and Speaking, he developed the Purpose-Led Growth Framework, guiding organizations to move beyond profit-only thinking toward growth anchored in values. His academic research on cage-free egg preferences has influenced national discussions on animal welfare, proving that evidence-based insight can shape ethical policy.
As an Adjunct Lecturer at Rusangu University, mentoring students remains deeply personal. Teaching, for Dr. Mayaba, is legacy work.
Lessons From the Hardest Moments
The most valuable leadership lesson he has learned is that leadership begins with self leadership. Before inspiring others, one must confront fear, doubt, and ego. Failure, in his view, is not the opposite of success. It is an essential part of it.
Each challenge strengthens resilience, deepens empathy, and sharpens purpose. The hardships he endured early in life now inform how he leads with both strength and compassion.
Navigating Technology With Humanity
In a world shaped by AI and constant disruption, Dr. Mayaba remains adaptable by choice, not reaction. He views technology as a tool to empower, never to replace. At H|M Agri-Food Consulting and Speaking, AI driven tools have strengthened marketing, communication, and outreach.
Yet he is firm about one boundary. Technology processes data. People create meaning. Adaptability, he believes, is rooted in mindset, continuous learning, and ethical grounding.
Innovation must always remain human centered.
A Vision for the Future of Agribusiness
What excites Dr. Mayaba most is the shift in agribusiness toward sustainability, transparency, and purpose. Consumers are demanding ethical sourcing and accountability. Digital marketplaces and AI are reshaping food systems at speed.
Drawing on his research into consumer behavior, he is committed to guiding this transformation responsibly, ensuring data, purpose, and human values remain aligned.
A Message to Global Leaders
To emerging leaders and global audiences, Dr. Mayaba offers a message shaped by lived truth. Purpose transforms pain into power. Circumstances do not define potential. Hope fuels courage. Resilience sustains momentum.
The world does not need success alone. It needs purposeful leaders who turn scars into solutions.
Unleash the lion within. Let your roar be heard.
