UK Secures Agreement from Angola, Namibia and DRC to Accept Deportees After Visa Threats

The British authorities have succeeded in obtaining agreements from three African nations which are Angola Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to accept back their citizens who entered the United Kingdom without authorization or who remained beyond their permitted stay. The UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood issued a warning that visa penalties would be imposed on the governments which refused to accept deportees from Britain during the negotiations which led to this achievement.

The UK government announced in early February 2026 that it had reached agreements with all three countries after having previously warned that it would impose visa restrictions on officials and citizens of countries which refused to assist with deportation efforts. The sanctions which could have been implemented included the suspension of diplomatic visa access and the cancellation of expedited visa processing and the suspension of visitor visas for high-ranking officials.

The three governments reached an agreement to begin providing emergency travel documents while they would also accept deportation requests for their citizens. The Home Office of the United Kingdom reported that more than 3000 individuals without legal authorization to stay in Britain could now be deported back to their home countries through charter flights which already operate to Namibia and have additional flights planned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola.

The diplomatic relationship between the UK and Angola and Namibia and the DRC experienced a complete transformation when these countries signed the agreements because the UK accused them of failing to process deportation paperwork which resulted in suspension of their return operations. The three governments changed their procedures to work with British authorities because they faced potential visa penalties. The UK government has increased its immigration enforcement activities during the past few months.

The Home Office reported its highest removal numbers since 2024 when the Labour government took control of the country. The UK government has removed 58500 illegal migrants and foreign criminals through deportations which included thousands who departed the country after immigration enforcement contacted them. The UK uses agreements with Angola and Namibia and the DRC to implement extensive border control reforms which will prevent unauthorized immigrants from staying in the country.

British officials said the new approach shows how countries will conduct diplomacy through visa access and processing benefits which will depend on how willing foreign governments are to accept their citizens back. The UK government showed interest in three African states while it warned that it would hold other countries responsible for their failure to work on removal cases.

The government has publicly identified other nations with low cooperation levels which include India Pakistan Nigeria Bangladesh Somalia and Gabon as potential candidates for future visa-linked enforcement measures.

For now, the new agreements mark a clear inflection point in the UK’s immigration strategy. They show that visa-sanction threats can generate rapid results where traditional negotiations had previously stalled. The next challenge for the British government will be to sustain cooperation from other nations and ensure removals and returns continue to proceed in an orderly and humane manner.
