Amazon‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Explores $10 Billion Investment in OpenAI

Talks Between Amazon and OpenAI

Amazon is considering a huge investment in OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, which might be almost $10 billion. However, these are only the initial conversations, and the conditions might be altered, but the mere possibility of such a transaction has a significant effect on the whole AI sector.

In fact, the mere formation of such an investment could lead to OpenAI’s total value going way beyond $500 billion. The talks also mention that OpenAI would be the customer of Amazon for its Trainium AI chips, and this would be a strong move in the AI hardware market for Amazon.

Why This Really Matters

OpenAI is no longer a charitable organization. It has moved from its nonprofit roots to a for-profit structure. The change allows the company to search for more financial supporters among large tech companies than the ones it already has. So, in short, Microsoft still owns approximately a 27 % share, but it is quite obvious that more money will enable OpenAI to upgrade its hardware capacity and realize new products.

Amazon is seemingly interested in this matter and still actively figuring out the best way to get included in the AI field, apart from which; related to that, the company has pumped in $8 billion in Anthropic which is an OpenAI rival while it also launched new chips called Trainium not long ago that are meant for AI workloads. Add to that an OpenAI collaboration around chips and infrastructure might be the reason why Amazon’s cloud service and chip business become invincible against the likes of Nvidia and Google.

Circular Deals in AI

Such an investment as this one is a part of a bigger picture of the AI world, where companies at the top of the chip and cloud industries sign up to provide AI firms with the tools necessary for their work; these firms, in return, declare that they will be the users of this kind of infrastructure. Consequently, a circle is formed whereby each side is a winner in terms of growth and revenue. In fact, OpenAI’s agreements with Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom could be cited as further instances of this pattern.

Besides that, OpenAI entered a $38 billion cloud computing contract with Amazon, which is a demonstration of how mutually dependent their businesses have been so far. Moreover, a move that funds this infrastructure can be seen as a vehicle that can take two companies beyond the scope of mere service agreements to a partnership that lasts for a long time.

What Might Be Different

The word “fluid” is used to describe the state of current negotiations, implying that the result may be different from what is expected. Amazon might decide to scale down its investment or not proceed with it at all. While talks are ongoing, neither of the two parties has commented on them publicly.

Anyhow, a question of this magnitude would never be put forward if a very strong confidence signal was not sent by one of the largest tech companies in the world. For OpenAI, fresh capital could open the door to more enterprise products and allow it to keep up with rising demand for AI computing ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌power.
